SDC is back, Omah Lay drops an instant hit and Bella Shmurda is the voice of the streets
In this Friday's edition, we highlight the notable latest music releases from the Nigerian music industry.
Show Dem Camp Releases Clone Wars Vol. 5
“The Clone Wars series are time capsules/future generation mementos/with each volume peep the rising crescendo” - Ghost on ‘Ghost Rant’.
Bang! Bang!
Show Dem Camp is back. It’s been 920 days since Ghost & Tec (the kings of omo boy raps) dropped the last installment of their famed Clone Wars series.
In between this period, we have to deal with the re-election of Buhari, inflation, unemployment, the COVID-19 pandemic and the End SARS protest.
The Clone Wars mixtape series, best known for its heavy socio-political themes, insight and therapeutic value, all from a Lasgidi POV, has a new entry.
“Clone Wars Vol. 5: The Algorhythm” sees the best rapping duo touch on everything that has happened since they took two gap years including Dangote’s women troubles. Baba even has a skit. The rich also cry bro.
The boys sound weary and wise as usual, dropping real life gems for men to navigate the clusterfuck known as the Federal Republic.
Tec is still talking about pies with open and brutal honesty (“one pie from the past calling my phone/she knows all my vices, hand on my throat”, and a deep analysis on Brazilian butt lifts “fake yansh does not rotate” that have flooded Lekki (get it? Lekki? Flood? Ah never mind).
Ghost is on his Old Man Logan p with words of wisdom - “Nigeria’s lemon is pepper spray.”
The guest list predictably has Poe whose penmanship is getting more mature by the day. There is also Mojo (where the hell has he been?) who drops the hilarious bar - “omo iko I dey change pies/my shawarma and dildo na the same size”, and an impressive female rapper by the name of Shalom Dubas. I have not heard a Nigerian female rapper with such a gripping voice since Eva Alordiah.
Jesse Jagz descends from his mountain in Jos to bless us with a rare verse and Reminisce, the sports-preneur drops a neat set of bars.
CW5 should hold us until the next election but with the Twitter ban, the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and the hunt for Sunday Igboho, we might need a Clone Wars Vol. 6 pretty soon guys.
Omah Lay Releases New Single ‘Understand’
Omah Lay, the Nigerian pop prince from Port-Harcourt, has released a new tune titled ‘Understand’ produced by the talented Tempoe.
A lot of singles are tagged hits before we even get the chance to press play but trust me on this one, ‘Understand’ is a hit from the first play. Omah Lay seems to be knocking smash hits whenever he feels like. This new single has a ‘galala’ bounce to it.
I can’t wait to hear what his album sounds like.
Bella Shmurda - High Tension 2.0 EP
The current voice of the Lagos streets, Bella Shmurda is out with a new project called ‘High Tension 2.0’.
The young street soldier who comes from the streets has uncanny views about life, the world, love and religion. For someone so young he is bugged down by all he has seen in his lifetime.
His new project should see him continue his ascent in the music industry and his reaffirm his position as the chosen representative to speak about life in the neglected slums of Lagos and the aspirations of the financially disenfranchised youth who were born into generational poverty.
Adekunle Gold Drops New Single ‘Sinner’
Adekunle Gold strikes again. His new single ‘Sinner’ featuring Lucky Daye is a moody number that touches on the addictive and dizzy nature of burning hot passion.
Within the last couple of years, Adekunle Gold has shown that he is a master of atmospheric Afrobeats music. Add ‘Sinner’ to your late night playlist next to Sade and Drake.
Oh and the artwork is gold! (sorry I couldn’t help myself.)
