ODUMODUBLVCK! BIG GUN SHOOTS NAIJA RAP TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS
He has gotten major co-signs from Wizkid to Declan Rice. Odumodublvck is bringing pure heat into Nigeria's music scene.
I don't care for Declan Rice, the West Ham footballer. I am a Manchester United fan and we don’t do that over here. However, I do care for the song by OdumoduBlvck - the latest rap export from the capital city.
Odumodublvck has taken the music scene in Nigeria by storm with his viral single 'Declan Rice.'
The best way to describe this song is a backhand slap from Thanos or tons of bricks falling from the sky. It's a heavy and hard track that demands your attention. It also has a lot of bounce. Declan Rice is simple without having a tight or complex rhyme structure.
It is Odumodublvck's style - he runs through tracks with the sheer force of his monstrous personality - think 2Pac or Eedris Abdulkareem. Save the intricate rhymes for the technical MCs, Odumodublvck puts his heart on his sleeve.
Apart from taking the streets and tweets by storm, Declan Rice also sits pretty high on Apple Music and Spotify - a rarity for a Nigerian rap single without an Afropop hook. It's a big win for Naija Rap (I think this is what we should officially call our Hip-Hop genre).
Almost a year ago, our Ghanaian brother Black Sherif crushed the building when he scored a number hit record on Apple Music Top 100: Nigeria hit for 'Kweku the Traveller.' It brought up a lot of discussions about the state of Hip-Hop in +234.
I wrote about Black Sherif in this newsletter and specifically said that Abuja has a lot of potentials and can crack the market if it switches from top boy-man dem lingo to omo-boy raps.
In December, Black Sherif headlined Island BlockParty. One of the artists on the bill that night was Odumodublvck, who, in the usual fashion, stormed the stage with his rambunctious posse. The ABJ rapper performed his sleeper hit 'Picanto' with Zlatan.
From the reaction of the crowd during his performance, you could see that Odumodublvck was onto something. A storm was brewing. A few months later, he has a bonafide rap hit on his hands.
This year has been good for rappers so far. Zlatan's 'Omo Ologo' is a favourite even among die-hard rap fans, and Naira Marley's breezy flow on 'Abracadabra' is one of the music highlights of Q1 2023.
Hopefully, this sets a trend for the rest of the year. The game needs new rap voices, and Odumodublvck is the latest.
