Abdulala (Abdulmalik Usman) is a budding singer with a new body of work, an EP called 'Head Over Heels'.
Abdulala tags himself as an Afro-soul artist, and it is no wonder that his 5-track project has a smooth and menthol feel. In 'Head Over Heels,' you don't get the humid sound that characterizes the umbrella genre of Afrobeats but a deviative shift to an easy-going, mid-tempo tone.
It's neither too high nor too low. It anchors itself in the middle, allowing Abdulala to dish out his love offerings. On the opener 'Features,' he says he will stick around "From Monday to Friday, Sunday."
Abdulala gives a sticky performance as he makes his greedy intention known of having his love interest and her features all for himself.
'Do Better', the succeeding track, ups the project's tempo. Here, the artist yearns for freedom and peace.
The EP's only collaboration, 'Normal' with KvngVidarr, adds a bit of grit thanks to the guest's acts gravel voice. "Closer, make we dey fire the boogie night. We go dey fire down," sings KvngVidarr on this track.
The last two tracks, 'Details,' and 'Let Me Know,' ensure the EP has a strong finish.
While Abdulala might need to tweak his vocal delivery to have more presence, his EP showcases the potential for a big career shortly.
